The Fast That Changed Everything
There was a young woman in college who had a deep hunger for God. Though her schedule was intense, she had disciplined herself to eat just one meal a day—not for health reasons, but out of a desire to stay focused on the Lord. She wanted to fast, but one meal a day was all she could manage at the time. It became a pattern she grew comfortable with. She even lost a good amount of weight, which seemed like a bonus. Still, she had never been able to go a full day without food.
After college, things shifted. She wasn’t as busy anymore, but oddly, it became harder to even maintain that simple one-meal routine. She began to feel a prompting: to spend extended time in the Word, to read through the entire Bible, and to allow the truth of Scripture to wash out anything secular education may have subtly planted. She committed herself to days of reading and praying in the Spirit.
And once again, she tried to fast.
But she just couldn’t follow through.
Each morning she would wake up determined: “Today I will fast for the Lord.” Yet by dinnertime, her willpower had vanished. It frustrated her. She loved the Lord deeply, but fasting still felt out of reach.
Then one quiet weekend afternoon, she was sitting with family, enjoying coffee and donuts—her favorite treat. Halfway through her donut, she suddenly felt it: a quiet but undeniable knowing deep in her spirit.
“You’re on your fast.”
No thunder. No voice from heaven. Just a holy interruption in the middle of an ordinary moment.
From that point on, she didn’t eat supper that night. She woke up the next morning expecting hunger—but instead found herself sustained. The willpower she had never been able to muster was simply there.
The fast lasted eighteen days, and it changed her life.
She became physically and spiritually more sensitive to the presence of the Lord. She began discerning things happening behind the scenes—spiritual realities she had never perceived before. She knew when angels entered the room. Her awareness in the Spirit increased dramatically. It was as if fasting had cleared the static and opened a new channel of divine understanding.
One day during prayer, the Lord invited her into a vision. He said, “Imagine a mountain.”
So she did. With her eyes closed, she pictured a large, steady mountain—until suddenly, it vanished. It was as if a curtain had closed over her imagination. The image disappeared into darkness.
Then He said, “Now imagine something else.”
She tried. A dog. A tree. Nothing. Her imagination was blank.
And then the Lord Himself placed an image in her mind.
“What do you see?” He asked.
She described it.
It was a strange experience, but deeply meaningful. She knew she was partnering with the Holy Spirit in a way she never had before. And with it came hope—hope that this season would bear much fruit.
She often tells others: Fasting changed everything.
But she doesn’t recommend jumping into it blindly. Her encouragement? Talk to the Holy Spirit. Wait on His prompting. Let Him guide your beginning. Others may do it differently, and that’s okay. But for her, waiting on the Lord’s timing made all the difference.
That fast not only deepened her spiritual sensitivity—it also led to clarity, discernment, and breakthrough.
And, as a side benefit… she lost 20 pounds. 😄
