“I Thought You Didn’t Die from Breathing Water…”
A Testimony of the Lord’s Mercy
When I was about 14, I loved the water—swimming, skiing, and especially gliding underwater. One afternoon, I went too deep and realized I couldn’t make it back up. I knew I wasn’t going to reach the surface in time, so I stopped struggling… and gave up. I took a breath, expecting the end.
But nothing happened.
Surprised, I pushed toward the surface and made it up. I swam back to shore where my mom was calling us in for supper. I walked out of the water, headed to the house, and—teenager that I was—thought to myself, “Huh, guess Mom’s not as smart as she thinks. People don’t die when they breathe water.”
I never even told her what had happened. Supper was ready, and I was starving after a full day in the water.
Years later, I realized how wrong I was—not just about water, but about the Lord’s mercy.
I should have died that day. But God, in His grace, spared my life. He had a purpose for me that hadn’t yet been fulfilled. That moment—one I barely thought twice about at the time—was divine intervention.
Thank You, Jesus, for sparing me, even when I didn’t yet understand how much I needed You.
— Still grateful after all these years.
